Gen Z didn't create fast fashion. You inherited it. And you're the first generation actually doing something about it.

Fast fashion as a concept exploded in the late 1990s and went absolutely nuclear in the 2000s. Zara. H&M. Forever 21. Then the 2010s brought it online. ASOS. Myntra. Shein. A new collection dropped every week. Sometimes every day. The message was constant: what you wore last month is already outdated. Buy more. Wear twice. Discard. Repeat.

Millennials largely went along with it. Not because they didn't care, but because the conversation around fashion waste wasn't mainstream yet. The Atacama Desert photos hadn't gone viral. The Rana Plaza building collapse that killed 1,134 garment workers in Bangladesh happened in 2013 and barely made the news cycle in most countries.

But Gen Z grew up with this information. You've had access to the receipts since you were teenagers. And you're shopping differently because of it.

Studies now show Gen Z is significantly more likely to research a brand's ethics before buying. More likely to choose secondhand. More likely to ask "who made this?" and "what happened to the excess?"

That is cultural change. Real cultural change.

And brands are panicking. Because the fastest growing consumer demographic on earth is also the one least likely to fall for their greenwashing campaigns and their "conscious collections" that represent 2% of their total output.
